Today in motorcycle history, October 23, 1972

Tragedy strikes the motorcycle racing world when a propane gas tank explodes inside a caravan killing British Grand Prix racer Dave Simmonds.  Simmonds was in Rungis, France enjoying a race with friends and only a spectator.

Dave Simmonds won the 1969 125cc Grand Prix World Championship for Kawasaki.  It was Kawasaki's very first world championship.
